Mentorship and leadership in teaching

Lead Teaching Assistant, Department of Mathematics, Michigan State University Aug 2024 – present

  • 2026 – 2027: co-leading a yearlong workshop series for first-year graduate TAs with Eloy Moreno-Nadales. Sessions so far:
    • Introductions: a gallery walk at whiteboards arranged in a circle, a conversation on what makes math instruction welcoming or alienating, and a “Math PhD passport” and department scavenger hunt that connect new students with senior graduate students.
    • Three Aspects of Teaching: group work and a gallery walk on (1) clarity and delivery (board layout, pacing, time traps), (2) communication and language (avoiding words like “trivial” or “obviously”, questioning and wait time) and (3) engagement and cohort needs, drawn from the TAs’ own classroom observations, to prepare their mock teaching. (slides, PDF)
  • Fall 2025 (MTH 299): prepared recitation worksheet materials, gathered TA feedback for the instructors, and substituted for recitation leaders when needed.
  • Spring 2025 (MTH 133): ran TA meetings, prepared weekly recitation worksheets, and set up Teams tools to track the TA timeline and grading deadlines.
  • Fall 2024: starting in August, ran the orientation for undergraduate learning assistants (ULAs), held mock-teaching and feedback sessions, and observed ULAs and GTAs during the semester to give feedback. As MTH 133 pod leader, ran meetings with recitation leaders and prepared the weekly recitation worksheets.

Graduate Lead, Center for Instructional Mentoring (CIM), Department of Mathematics, MSU Summer 2024

  • Met weekly with first-time graduate instructors to guide them, and introduced the teaching technology they could use.
  • Created a teaching handbook, built on interviews with senior GTAs, to guide first-time teachers.

Mentor, Academic Culture and English Skills (ACES) Program, Michigan State University Summer 2024

  • Mentored incoming international graduate students preparing to become MSU teaching assistants: U.S. classroom culture, university structure and cross-cultural communication, plus social events.

Research Mentor, Topology RTG, Michigan State University Summer 2023

  • Guided an undergraduate student through readings in Morse theory and gave feedback on the final paper and presentation.

Supervisor, Math Learning Center (MLC), Michigan State University Fall 2022 – Spring 2023, Fall 2024

  • Managed how tutors were distributed among students and arranged the room to match demand. (Teaching Exemption Fellowship, 2022 – 2023.)

Teaching development and educational research

  • Program Evaluator & Instructional Researcher, AI for Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Workshop, Michigan State University, May 2026. Designed pre/post surveys and observation protocols, analyzed participant feedback, and wrote the evaluation report with curriculum recommendations (Mentored Teaching Project).
  • Graduate Certification in College Teaching, MSU Graduate School (CCT portfolio).
  • Colleges Online Learning Academy (COLA) Fellowship, Michigan State University, Summer 2024 (COLA page).
